What the fallacy is

The gambler's fallacy is the belief that a fair game owes you a correction: that after a run of reds, black has become more likely, or that a number which has not hit in a long time is due. It is the single most expensive idea in gambling, because it feels exactly like insight.

The exact math of no memory

Each spin of a fair single zero wheel is independent: 37 pockets, each 1 in 37, with red at 18 in 37, every time, unconditionally. Streak math and next spin math are different questions. Before any spins, a run of five reds has probability about 1 in 37, and a run of ten about 1 in 1,347. But after nine reds have already happened, the tenth is not carrying that whole improbability; it is one ordinary spin at 18 in 37, about 48.6%. The rarity lived in the sequence, and the sequence is already over.

Past results never change future odds. There is no roulette record, pattern, or history, ours included, from which anything about the next spin can be read. A fair wheel cannot be beaten by watching it.

What the data shows about streaks

Real streaks are longer than intuition expects, which is precisely why the fallacy bites. In 100,000 simulated sessions of 100 spins betting red throughout, the longest run of losses averaged about 6.2 spins per session, and the single worst session sat through 24 consecutive losses. Doubling after each loss through a run like that is how Martingale sessions end early; the run was never due to stop.

Why streaks feel meaningful

Human pattern detection was built for a world where streaks usually do mean something: tracks, weather, behavior. The mind treats a random cluster as a signal and invents the correction that must follow. Casinos happily print the last twenty numbers on a board, because the board makes every fallacy feel like research while changing nothing about the wheel.

Common questions

Are hot and cold numbers real?

As history, yes: over any stretch of spins some numbers will have hit often and some not at all, and the gaps can get surprisingly long. As prediction, no: every number has exactly a 1 in 37 chance on the next spin regardless of its history. Statistics about the past are real records of a fair process, not signals about its future.

After ten reds in a row, is black due?

No. The eleventh spin is the same wheel with the same 37 pockets: red 18/37, black 18/37, zero 1/37, exactly as always. The run of ten reds was unlikely before it happened; now that it has happened, it has no power over anything. Nothing is ever due on a fair wheel.

How long do losing streaks actually get?

Longer than intuition expects. Betting red every spin for 100 spins, our simulated sessions saw an average longest losing run of about 6.2 spins, and the worst session in 100,000 endured 24 losses in a row. Any plan that cannot survive a long run is a plan that ends badly.
